Common Questions

Does CryptaVitae store my data on your servers?

No. Your vault exists entirely on your machine, encrypted with a key derived from your PIN. Crypta Vitae has no server that receives, stores, or has access to your records at any point. The only outbound connection is an RFC 3161 timestamp request sent to an independent timestamp authority when you save a new record.

What happens to my records if I stop my subscription?

Your vault file remains on your machine and continues to be readable with your PIN using the installed application. You retain full access to your records. You will not be able to activate CryptaVitae on a new device after the licence expires.

Can I use CryptaVitae on more than one device?

The Solo licence covers one device. The Practice and Enterprise licences cover multiple individual vaults. Synchronisation between devices is handled via encrypted vault backup — your data is never routed through our servers.

Is CryptaVitae suitable for GDPR-regulated work?

CryptaVitae is designed to give you direct custody of your data. Because your records are stored locally and encrypted with a key only you hold, no third party can access or process your data without your participation. This is a strong position for data controllers handling special category data. You should satisfy yourself that local-first storage meets your organisation's specific GDPR obligations.

What are RFC 3161 timestamps and why do they matter?

RFC 3161 is an international standard for trusted timestamping. When you save a record, CryptaVitae sends a 32-byte SHA-256 fingerprint of the content — not the record itself — to an independent timestamp authority unconnected to Crypta Vitae. It is mathematically impossible to reconstruct your record from this fingerprint. The authority returns a signed token confirming that fingerprint existed at that moment, providing independently verifiable proof that your record has not been backdated or altered.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Solo and Practice licences include a 14-day free trial with no payment required. Enterprise arrangements are available on request with a scoped evaluation period.
